This book meets the long-awaited need for a comprehensive overview of the biological role of HDLs. Edited by one of the pioneers in HDL and cholesterol research, this monograph summarizes current knowledge on HDL turnover, regulation and physiology. Clearly structured, the various sections cover HDL structure, formation, secretion and removal, as well as plasma metabolic factors. The biological activities and clinical aspects are equally discussed, as is the impact of HDL on common diseases and their prevention.

The book provides an introduction to the methods of quantum statistical mechanics used in quantum optics and their application to the quantum theories of the single-mode laser and optical bistability. The generalized representations of Drummond and Gardiner are discussed together with the more standard methods for deriving Fokker--Planck equations. Particular attention is given to the theory of optical bistability formulated in terms of the positive P-representation, and the theory of small bistable systems. This is a textbook at an advanced graduate level. It is intended as a bridge between an introductory discussion of the master equation method and problems of current research.

Christopher Fielding is Neider Professor of Cardiovascular Physiology at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF). He graduated from University College in London (UK) where he also received his PhD. After appointments at Oxford University and at the University of Chicago, he joined the faculty at UCSF in 1971, being appointed full professor in 1985. Professor Fielding is a pioneer in the HDL field who developed many of the current concepts in HDL metabolism and its role in health and disease.

Morach wollte gerade zu Bett gehen, da hörte sie ein Geräusch an der Tür ihrer Hütte. Ein armseliges Kratzen, ein leises Winseln, wie von einem gepeitschten Hund. Sie wartete eine ganze Weile. Morach war eine weise Frau, eine Seherin. Viele klopften an ihre Tür auf der Suche nach dunklen Geschenken, und keiner ging enttäuscht von ihr. Die Enttäuschung kam später. Morach wartete auf einen Hinweis, wer dieser Besucher sein könnte. Ein Kind? Der Ruf war schwächlich gewesen, wie der eines kränkelnden Kindes. Aber kein krankes Kind, nicht einmal der Balg eines Zigeuners, hätte den Mut, in der Dunkelheit an Morachs Tür zu klopfen. Ein Mädchen mit wachsendem Bauch, das sich fortgeschlichen hatte, während ihr Vater mit den gewalttätigen Händen schlief? Ein Besucher aus einer dunkleren Welt, als Katze verkleidet? Ein Wolf? Ein mißgebildetes, feuchtes Monster? "Wer ist da?" fragte Morach, und ihre alte Stimme war scharf wie ein Messer.
Schweigen. Kein leeres Schweigen, sondern das Schweigen eines Namenlosen.
""Wie nennt man dich?" fragte Morach. Angst hatte ihren Verstand geschärft.
"Schwester Ann", kam die Antwort, leise wie vom Totenbett.
Morach ging auf die Tür zu, öffnete sie, und Schwester Ann taumelte. Ihr geschorener Kopf glänzte im Kerzenschein, ihre Augen waren schwarz vor Entsetzen und ihr Gesicht rußverschmiert.
"Bei allen Heiligen!" sagte Morach gelassen. "Was haben sie dir denn jetzt angetan?"
Das Mädchen schwankte gegen den Türrahmen und stützte....
