Die Münzen der Tyrannen

The early tyranny in ancient Sicily is known to us mainly through literary and epigraphic sources. This technical article deals with a more recent research approach that has become possible thanks to advances in numismatic research and various new finds over the past two decades. By systematically recording the coinage and all coins found that are associated with the Emmenids of Akragas, it was possible to work out distribution, nominal systems and motif paradigms, which also provided new insights into the relevance of the early tyrants in Sicily. A methodologically and thematically contemporary ancient historical study of the Sicily of the Emmenids and Deinomenids in the fifth century BC.

Christian Leeck, geboren 1981 in Wuppertal, ist assoziierter Forscher am Lehrstuhl für Alte Geschichte der Bergischen Universität Wuppertal. Er ist ein profunder Kenner der Geschichte und Topographie der beiden südwestsizilischen Poleis, Selinunt und Akragas, und ihres jeweiligen Hinterlands. Er forschte unter anderem zur selinuntinischen Chora im Spannungsfeld zwischen Kernstadt, Nachbarpolis Agrigent und dem indigenen Siedlungssystem.
