This cutting edge collection examines Japan's population issue, exploring how declining demographic trends are affecting Japan's social structure, specifically in the context of Greater Tokyo, life infrastructure, public finance and the economy. Considering the failures of past Japanese policies from the perspective of population, national land, and politics, it argues that the inability of past administrations to develop a long-term and comprehensive policy has exacerbated the population crisis. Yoichi Funabashi Ph.D. is Co-Founder and Chairman of the Asia Pacific Initiative and former Editor-in-Chief for the Asahi Shimbun. He is an award-winning Japanese journalist, columnist and author. He has written extensively on foreign affairs, the US-Japan Alliance, economics and historical issues in the Asia Pacific. He has a distinguished career as a journalist, notably winning the Shorenstein Journalism Award as the first Japanese recipient, the Japan Press Award known as Japan's Pulitzer Prize for his columns on international affairs, and many other prizes.
