How can the law react to the growing uncertainty within modern society? How can it modify its forms and mechanisms so that it can face the phenomenon of uncertainty appropriately? To what extent will the legal system be able to see a moment of uncertainly not only as a threat to be averted but also to make use of this as a productive factor? The authors of the articles in this volume provide the answers to these questions.

Everyone is talking about the "knowledge society." However, the attention given to the increasing significance of knowledge corresponds to the awareness of a growing uncertainty within modern society. How can the law react to this? How can it modify its forms and mechanisms, in particular the concept of legal entity and the institutionalized contacts to its surroundings, so that it can face the phenomenon of uncertainty appropriately? To what extent will the legal system be able to see a moment of uncertainty not only as a threat to be averted but also to make use of this as a productive factor? The essays in this volume, written for a symposium in honor of Karl-Heinz Ladeur, who was given emeritus status, provide the answers to these questions.
