The contributors to this volume examine theological education around 1600 from an interdenominational perspective: Reformed, Lutheran, Catholic, and (Eastern) Orthodox. The focus is on specific places of study, but above all on the students and their study practices.
The contributors to this volume examine theological studies around 1600 across denominational lines, focusing on the organization, academic practices, and student culture. The first section provides an overview of theological education within the various denominational educational landscapes; to this end, it presents different locations and academic regulations. The second section begins with a contribution that explores the stated goals of Lutheran theological education and then focuses on the conduct of studies and student life. The third section examines specific study practices at various locations, ranging from practice sermons and private seminars and disputations to methods of exegesis and note-taking.
Methodologically, the volume combines case studies in the history of universities and theology with the analysis of sources that have received little attention to date. This shifts the focus to actual study practices beyond statutes and regulations. Key sources include autobiographical accounts, lecture notes, and college regulations that shed light on student life, the conduct of studies, and teaching practices. The analysis also draws on printed disputations and notes, with sermon series serving as an integral part of academic studies. Contributors include scholars from the fields of theology and history from six countries and representing four different denominational backgrounds.
Geographically, the case studies range from Reformed locations such as Herborn and Basel - and Switzerland in general - to Lutheran locations such as Rostock, Wittenberg, and Jena, and from the Catholic city of Vienna to the Orthodox city of Kyiv.
